Animals and Pets

Dogs

Sand City Municipal Code (section 6.04) requires dog licenses:
Every person owning or having charge, care or control over any dog,
shall, after the dog attains the age of four months, annually secure
from the City a license and tag for the dog. The tag shall be attached to a collar or harness upon the dog and during the term of the license shall remain attached.

All licenses expire annually on April 30th

Cost: $5 for a neutered dog & $10 for a un-neutered dog
- Proof of current rabies vaccination is required
- New licenses and renewals may be obtained from the Records Clerk, Sand City Police Department.
Call 394-1451 weekdays before 4:00 p.m.

Cats

Sand City does not license cats.

If a citizen wants a cat licensed (or any exotic pet), you can obtain an ID tag from the SPCA (373-2631) or register your cat with the Monterey County Animal Control (384-1396).

Lost and stray Animals

The City of Sand City does not have services to deal with lost and found animals. If you encounter a stray cat or dog, please call the County of Monterey Health Department Animal Control Program at (831) 384-1396.

Their address is 2840 Fifth Avenue, Marina. It is recommended that you call for directions to their facility (within old Fort Ord).

You can also call the SPCA of Monterey County at (831) 373-2631.
Public hours at the Animal Control Program are:
Monday through Friday  12:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Closed Sundays and holidays

A reminder: please be cautious if you encounter a stray animal, particularly at night or while emptying the garbage. In the dark, skunks can look like cats, and wolverines often pass for a dog.
